We're Hiring

Ecological Farming Intern

Reclaim Urban Farm:

Growing good veggies is our passion and we do it with our community and environment in mind. We sell our produce to restaurants, retailers and farm direct to consumers. Our farm is in transition, which is a perfect time to start working for us as there becomes more professional growth potential as a horticultural operation. We still are keeping our same philosophies but are moving to a rural farm where the owner Ryan grew up on. This means more land, more indoor space and more opportunity for farming. This also means that the position will be located at 1 mile north of Pigeon Lake close to Sandholm hall.

Position Description: This position is approximately 40 hours a week starting May 1st and continuing until the end of August. Flexibility in this timeframe is available. As we build our team for the summer we are looking for a variety of skill sets. We need help with our marketing (farmers markets, organizing our Community supported Agriculture program, deliveries), growing (indoor growing of microgreens etc, outdoor growing of field vegetables, using machinery to prepare land), greenhouse, as well as our educational and consulting events (taste of Edmonton). Applicants will be given some flexibility to focus on where their skills and interest lie. However, all of our staff work in the field as well as help process vegetables (harvest, wash, package etc.) so a background in physical labour is very useful.

Training and Supervision Provided: Daily supervision will be provided and the interns will primarily be working directly with and assisting either the owner of Reclaim urban farm, the microgreen manager or the field manager. On occasion, the intern may conduct individual work tasks, however, regular check ins with the owners via text, phone, and email will occur. A session about general training about the farm, food safety, occupational safety etc. will be given upon starting the position. Most training is on the job as we have found this the most effective method to teach and learn about our farm practices. Monthly intern meetings will provide some one-on-one time to ask questions, provide feedback and focus on the specific skill the intern aims to cultivate.

Skills required:

  • Passion for growing food

  • Class 5 drivers license or above is required (a drivers abstract will be required following the interview)

  • Attention to detail

  • Understanding of food safety

  • Mind for efficiency

  • Background in physical labour is very helpful

  • Agricultural and horticultural education and experience are assets.

  • Social media savvy is an asset.
